Dionysus – The God of Ecstasy and Inspiration Behind My Latest Collection
Jaschel Abassov
Dionysus the god of ecstasy, also known as Bacchus in Roman mythology, is one of the most fascinating and complex gods in the ancient Greek pantheon. He is the god of wine, fertility, theater, ritual madness, and religious ecstasy. Unlike other deities who represent order and structure, Dionysus embodies the wild and untamed aspects of nature and human experience. His influence is chaotic yet liberating, inviting mortals to transcend the mundane and embrace the ecstatic—moments where the self dissolves into something much greater.
According to myth, Dionysus was born from Zeus and the mortal woman Semele, making him a god who uniquely straddles the line between the divine and human worlds. His birth was unusual, to say the least—after his mother was consumed by Zeus’s lightning, he was sewn into Zeus’s thigh and later "reborn." This dual birth signifies Dionysus’s connection to both life and death, as well as his ability to transcend ordinary existence.
His followers, known as Maenads or Bacchae, would perform wild rites in his honor, often venturing into the wilderness to dance, drink, and fall into states of extreme emotion, sometimes to the point of frenzy. These celebrations, known as Dionysian Mysteries, were not simply about indulgence—they were rituals meant to free the soul from the constraints of daily life, uniting worshippers with the divine force Dionysus represents.
It’s easy to see why wine plays such an important role in his mythology. Wine, like Dionysus himself, possesses a dual nature—it can bring joy and release, but in excess, it can lead to madness and chaos. Dionysus was revered for his power to create balance through this tension, offering mortals both pleasure and transformation.
My inspiration to dedicate a collection to Dionysus came one evening, quite unexpectedly. I was enjoying a glass of wine, and before long, I found myself slipping into a state of euphoria—free, relaxed, and oddly connected to something more profound. The experience reminded me of Dionysus’s ability to draw people into an altered state, where the barriers between the ordinary and the extraordinary dissolve. It was in that moment that I understood the allure of Dionysus and the deep spiritual connection his followers must have felt during their rituals.
This collection is my tribute to that divine ecstasy, that Dionysus embodies. I aim to capture the spirit of wild freedom, the surrender to the moment, and the transformation that comes from letting go of control. Each piece will reflect aspects of the Dionysian experience—whether it’s the joy of celebration, the thrill of abandon, or the beauty of the untamed.
Dionysus teaches us that in order to truly live, we must occasionally step outside the boundaries of our normal lives and embrace the chaos and beauty that life has to offer. In that spirit, I hope this collection inspires others to honor the untamed parts of themselves and find beauty in the wildness.
So, tell me did the tale of Dionysus, the god of ecstasy who birthed wine and madness, inspire you to break free from your boundaries? To savor life like a fine wine, rich and intoxicating, and to embrace the beautiful chaos of madness with open arms?
